‘Peace’ by Aristophanes at Chickenshed
Join us for a special performance of Peace by Aristophanes, a timeless comedy first staged in 421 BCE. Premiering just days before a peace treaty between Athens and Sparta, this play’s message of hope is as relevant today as ever.
An International Collaboration
This performance marks the end of a week-long workshop, a collaboration between Chickenshed, UCL, Teatro delle Albe (Ravenna, Italy), and the Universities of Bristol and Parma. It brings together students from Chickenshed’s Foundation Degree, our Young Company, and BA Humanities students from the UK and Italy.
Led by Theatre Innovators
The project is led by Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari, founders of Teatro delle Albe, known for their unique approach to theatre and community-building. Marco’s ‘non-school’ method allows young people to breathe new life into classics like Peace. Supporting the project are dramaturg Giovanna Di Martino (UCL/APGRD) and assistant directors Zoë Carvalho Morris (Almeida Theatre) and Lucy Ruddiman (University of Bristol).
Supported by Global Partners
Generous support comes from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (London), Ravenna Teatro, the Leventis Foundation (UCL), the Gilbert Murray Trust, the Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition (Bristol), the Institute of Classical Studies (London), UCL, and the University of Parma.
